This 4CD box set brings together one hundred of the most popular and most enduring numbers from the dark years of World War II.

Some are rousing and uplifting, even defiant, such as Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye and Sing As We Go. Some are hand-on-heart patriotic (There’ll Always Be An England); some, like Beneath The Lights Of Home, are achingly nostalgic, and there’s more than a passing mention of Australia (When a Boy from Alabama Meets a Girl from Gundagai).

There are dance tunes (Chattanooga Choo Choo, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Frenesi) and cool jazz (Blues In The Night); there’s fun and sometimes cheeky humour (Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major and The Trolley Song).

There’s a willingness to find something to smile about even in the deprivations of wartime living (FDR Jones) and an unquenchable optimism (Bless ’Em All, On The Sunny Side Of The Street). There’s plenty of romance – lovers together (A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening, A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square) and lovers separated (Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree).

But most importantly, there is the hope that defined an era, expressed in those immortal words ‘There’ll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover tomorrow, just you wait and see…’

The 1950s and 1960s was a time when the great studio orchestras flourished. Mantovani, Frank Chacksfield, Ronnie Aldrich, Eric Rogers, Stanley Black - they all recorded for DECCA, and Mantovani (together with Vera Lynn) was responsible for some of the company’s biggest sales in those decades. They played popular hits of the era, both new songs as well as lush arrangements of existing ones, and their influence was far-reaching – most notably, in our time, on André Rieu.

Turn Back The Hands Of Time celebrates this era and brings back these golden oldies in beautifully remastered versions.

Andrea Bocelli | GIORDANO: Andrea Chenier

ARTISTS

Andrea Chénier: Andrea Bocelli
Maddalena: Violeta Urmana
Orchestra e Coro Sinfonica di Milano, Giuseppe Verdi
Marco Armiliato

TRACK LISTING

GIORDANO: Andrea Chenier

Andrea Bocelli stars in the title role of Giordano's romantic and passionate opera of life and death, set during the French Revolution.

Andrea Chénier, a historical figure and poet who lost his life to the French Revolution, gave Giordano and his librettist, Illica, inspiration for an opera of action, intrigue, and betrayal that touches and thrills.

The score and text beautifully underscore the triumph of love over death when Chénier and his beloved make their final exit to the guillotine. Accompanied by some of the most stirring music of the Italian repertoire, their closing duet is among opera's greatest moments.

This new recording partners Andrea Bocelli with the aristocratic soprano of Violeta Urmana, who has sung the role of Maddalena at the world's leading houses, including The Metropolitan Opera, New York.
