BEHIND THE SCENES

American jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, one of the world’s top-selling instrumental artists, invited an extraordinary variety of musical artists -- including Sting, Josh Groban, Steven Tyler, Yo-Yo Ma, John Mayer, Katharine McPhee, Lucia Micarelli, and Sy Smith -- to join him on-stage with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra for a pair of once-in-a-lifetime concerts, produced by Bobby Colomby and directed by Jim Gable, at Boston’s historic Symphony Hall, one of the world’s most exquisite performance venues.

A master artist and performer, Botti, who’s sold nearly three million albums worldwide, worked closely with an unparalleled roster of the world’s greatest musicians, drawing from a wide-ranging repertoire of pop, jazz, and classical music to create a series of aesthetically rewarding performances and two-night’s worth of unforgettable concert experiences. Chris Botti In Boston, an extraordinarily luxurious film of the two-night event, captures and accentuates the warmth, excitement, chemistry and spontaneity of the shows.

The Sellout is the Grammy Award winning singer / songwriter's first album in more than 3 years and will be released by Concord Records in the U.S., Island Records in the U.K. and Universal Music Group, internationally.

The Sellout, featuring 12 new songs, was co-written and executive produced by Gray in Los Angeles throughout 2009. The album was mixed by four- time Grammy Award winning mixer Manny Marroquin whose credits include top 10 singles for Lady Gaga, Jay Z, Rihanna, Alicia Keyes, Kanye West and John Mayer. Collaborators on the album include Bobby Brown, The Bodyrockers' Kaz James and Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum formerly of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver.

It's clear from opening moments of the record's first single, the irresistibly anthemic "Beauty In The World", that The Sellout is the work of an artist who has reconnected with the essence of her creative gifts after a long, soul-numbing journey through the music biz's star-making machinery. "The Sellout tells the story of how I found my salvation in just being myself instead of who other people thought I should be," said the striking singer. "I had got to a place in my career where I tried everything that was asked of me and in doing so I lost sight of who Macy Gray really is. I spent over a year making this album without any pressure or opinions and being able to choose the co-writers, producers and artists that felt good to me. As a result, it really reflects my true identity. I feel like I have finally made the album I was capable of and that my fans wanted. These are some of my favorite songs that I've written."

Sparkling melodies and personal lyrical insights dazzle throughout The Sellout, an authentic and confidently delivered statement from one of contemporary music's most skillful and creative forces. The highlights are rich and plentiful including the alluring, soul-pop groove of "Lately", "That Man" a mouth-watering slice of Ting Ting's inflected 80's new-wave, the Joan Jett meets T- Rex thump and screaming Slash guitar of "Kissed It", and the beguiling, "Still Hurts", a vulnerable, emotion filled keep-sake ballad, just to name a few.

Russell has always yearned to record this album. It combines tracks that he used to perform in northern Working Men’s Clubs with his love of soul music. Only now does Russell feel confident to record the album in a way that will do justice to the material, allowing the general public to see a side of Russell they’ve never seen before.

The songs chosen demonstrate the power, range and versatility of Russell’s voice and Russell has taken care that each and every track on the album reflects his personal interpretation of the songs. From the emotion of “Georgia” to the infectiously catchy “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” to the total rockout (& knockout) “Soul Man” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” this album really has something for everyone. The vocals on the opening track “Me and Mrs Jones” truly show why Russell is regarded as one of the UK’s most talented singers of today.

In making the album the producer, Nick Patrick, pulled together the best musicians and backing singers that the UK and US can offer. Recorded in Capitol studios, top LA musicians worked alongside Amy Winehouse’s band, who perform on the more up-tempo tracks. The album is a tremendous blend of raw power with a silk veneer.
The arrangers are also the finest the world has to offer, with multi-award and Grammy-award winning Jorge Calandrelli and Patrick Williams bringing their presence to bear on the songs.

In short, this album combines simply great songs, interpreted by one of the nation’s favourite artists and recorded in a manner that oozes class. A tremendous listening experience for young and old alike.

Hamel’s songs are achingly catchy, or sometimes just aching. They often juxtapose deeply sad and even scathing lyrics with happy melodies that sweep you in. Imagine the musical landscape of a lush big band who would play with Frank Sinatra or Peggy Lee set against the emotional palette of Jeff Buckley...
Hamel is complex, seductive, clever. His songs reflect subtlety, anxiety, euphoria.

How is Hamel in love, happy or heartbroken? “Both. I don’t believe that love makes you happy. I believe in relationships and being in love, but I think you always keep longing for something you can’t explain and perhaps romanticise past relationships. I don’t analyse the lyrics when I’m writing them... only after. From my songs you can tell that in love I’m usually the one who is dumped rather than the one who dumps. And although that’s true and I might embrace that moment, I’m also very lucky in that now I’m very happy. It seems that I put all my melancholy in my songs.”

Steve Cropper, guitarist forthe Blues Brothers,  Booker T. and the MGs and one of the main architects of the unmistakable Stax sound of the 1960s along with vocalist/keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, the voice of the Rascals and the pivotal figure in the blue-eyed soul movement of that same era, have gotten back together for a second collaborative recording, MIDNIGHT FLYER (out June 15).

Midnight Flyer, recorded in Nashville and mixed by the legendary David Z, is the followup to Nudge It Up a Notch, the 2008 initial release by Cropper and Cavaliere that scored critical acclaim from the music and mainstream press. The San Francisco Chronicle called Nudge It Up a Notch an unexpected delight, while BluesWax heralded the project as one of the great surprises of 2008.

The Stax legacy is very much alive in Midnight Flyer, an album that will  once again showcase the songwriting skills of two towering figures from one of the most seminal periods in the history of American pop music. Alos on board throughout most of the albums' 12 tracks is drummer/percussionist/vocalist Tom Hambridge, who also lent a hand with the crafting of the previous album.   "Felix and I come from pretty much the same musical school  but from different geographical locations", said Cropper recently.  "He's a Jersey boy at heart, and I grew up in Memphis, but when soul meets soul, what can you say? There are no borders. There are no boundaries."

But geography does play a role in the making of great songs, says Cavaliere. "Steve has that Southern vernacular, which is something I really like", he said to MNN. "Its almost like another language to those of us from the East Coast. It has a certain folky quality to it. Some of those idioms are part of the hit songs that Steve has written and recorded over the years, and they're part of this record as well."

The impact of both of these musicians and songwriters on pop music is nearly impossible to quantify. As part of Booker T. & the MGs, the house band for the Stax label in its original incarnation during the 1960s, Cropper co-wrote and produced classics by artists like Eddie Floyd (Knock On Wood), Wilson Pickett (In the Midnight Hour) and the Otis Redding classic (Sittin on the Dock of the Bay). In later years, he lent his instrumental and production skills to a range of artists including Jeff Beck, the Blues Brothers, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and many others.

Cavaliere came to prominence in the mid-60s as vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter for the Rascals (initially known as the Young Rascals). Cavaliere wrote and/or sang several of the bands biggest hits, including Good Lovin (1966), Groovin (1967), Its a Beautiful Morning (1968) and People Got To Be Free (1968). The term blue-eyed soul was coined during the Rascals heyday,  largely due to the groups highly successful forays into R and B soul  styles that had been developed and previously dominated by African-American artists.

Co-produced by Cropper, Cavaliere and Hambridge, Midnight Flyer captures the synergy and brilliance that only emerges when two powerful musical forces can come together. The result is a range of styles and shades, from heartfelt ballads like When Youre With Me to the soul-charged I Cant Stand It, a churning vocal duet featuring Cavaliere and his daughter Aria. Sexy Lady harkens back to the soul stylings of the 70s, while the funky instrumental Do It Like This digs into a tight groove and makes plenty of room for Croppers tasty riff work to close out the set.

"The main thing we both take away from this record is how much fun we had making it", says Cavaliere. "We may have used a lot of new technology that didnt even exist when Steve and I were recording back in the day, but the songs themselves are still the most important part of the process, and we just had a blast writing and recording them. I think that spirit comes through on the record."   Cropper notes a timelessness about Cavaliere that serves as a metaphor for the music itself.  "Felix is ageless", he says. "Sure, you can look at him and see that hes gotten older since those early days, just like we all have. But if you close your eyes, he sounds as young and energetic as he did when he was making records back in the 60s . . . Working together on records like this reminds us of the kinds of things that go into the making of a good song. We're still doing that, and were still having fun doing it."
